Sanjay was passionate about education, technology, engineering, innovation, and while at E3D, improving the ability of humanity to manufacture. The E in E3D actually stands for education, and Sanjay found great satisfaction in learning through doing and helping others do the same. E3D is planning to set up a foundation in Sanjay’s name to educate and assist young engineers in achieving their goals.
Sanjay would say often that you really die twice; one time when you stop breathing and a second time, a bit later on, when somebody says your name for the last time. In that sense, through this foundation and through his impact on the 3D printing community, he will continue to live on for a very, very long time.
Sanjay always said one of his life goals was to “add to the sum-total of humanities knowledge” (a never-ending goal). This foundation will, undoubtedly, honor his legacy by continuing to grow that knowledge.
I’ve known Sanjay since E3D was in a chicken shed back in 2013. Sanjay was not just the brilliant cofounder and face of E3D that we all know and love, he was also my closest friend in this community. We would talk often, about things from SpaceX’s latest launch, to the 5 axis CNC he’d hacked a microscope onto, to real-life stuff. I could relate to him on a level that I can’t with most people. We understood each other. I profoundly admired not only his engineering abilities and technical skills, but his kindness, humor, and passion. I will miss him deeply, he was one of a kind and a treasured friend.
